33 - Frozen in time

Previous session: 32 - MultiLevel Shenanigans

Unfrozen
...

When getting closer to the only unfrozen figure, we notice it is a looking human woman between 60 and 65 years old. It looks like she is not used to be around people anymore (due to her messy hair, her dress stained, a slumped posture, and really intensive expressions).

Old woman
Where did you come from?
Nesvalyn
From far away.
Azzy
It doesn't matter.
Old woman
Did you come from woods?
Azzy
Yeah
Old woman
The village has been trapped, for like, 15 years.
Azzy
Can't you leave the place?
Old woman
And how do I leave the whole world? I can't get on a chariot and fly away!
Nesvalyn
Are you the only one unfrozen?
Old woman
As far as I know, yes.
Nesvalyn
Do you know why it happened?
Old woman
It's kind of a long story, please come in! You must be freezing, I'll make some tea.

she leads to the church.

Old woman
My name is Beryl.
Azzy
Nice to meet you, how long has it been like this?

We follow her and we enter in that standard medieval looking church. When we're getting in the sanctuary room, we notice it's kept repaired and took care of, revealing it's where she spent most of her time.
She lead us to a side door, then to a set of stairs, then another door, finally leading to a clutter space, her living place. It's just a circular sitting room with two doors, placed in a triangle way, filled with clutter and junk. The smell is stale and full of body odors, but mostly hidden with herbs.
The fire gets lit, and she invites us to sit, and starts to prepare the tea.

Azzy
How long it has been like this?
Beryl
Let's see...

she starts to count on her fingers

Beryl
Probably like fifty, no, sixty years?
Balnorin
Do you remember how it happen?
Beryl
I recall that faithful day. You see, I live here, in the church. Because my father is a holy man, a priest. And with the leading up of the great freezing, the town has been terrorized by this evil wicked sorceress. And she was a menace, kinds injured, animals missing, food stored spoiled, horrible things. So my father had called the whole village together to offer a Prayer of protection to the Great Winter father to protect us from the curse of the witch right? During the protecting ritual, the sorceress attacked the church, and in a fit of rage, my father led the whole town: fighters, farmers, and whoever could into the woods to hunt the witch down. That's when she casts the most powerful spell to freeze everybody, except me. I don't know why I got sparred.
Azzy
Did this witch had a name?
Beryl
Gosh, I don't remember, I'm even surprised I recall mine. I just take care of what I can, to be sure they don't fall down there. Especially when the wind blows.
Nesvalyn
Any traces, journal or logs or from your father?
Beryl
Oh, you know, he was a really private man, even to me. If there is any element or clue, I didn't found it. I searched every inch of the church, or in the village, and I even didn't find the sorceress to ask her to reverse this spell.
Azzy
You don't know where she is, but she is somewhere. Do you know any details on how spell works?
Beryl
I don't know anything about spell. As my father said, magic is a wicked thing.
Azzy
Of course.
Senri
I agree.
Beryl
But whatever this incantation is, I'm the only one in the whole world that can move.
Nesvalyn
Where's the closest village?
Beryl
It's about two or three days on foot.
Nesvalyn
Did you manage to contact them?
Beryl
No, as everyone is frozen.
Nesvalyn
What is this organization of holy men you mentionned earlier?
Beryl
We're the only ones who follow the Winter Father.
Nesvalyn
Do you mind if we can check his desk?
Beryl
Please, if you have some clues and find a way to reverse the spell, please do.

She stands up and diriges us through the church until the basement, showing her father's studies.

The study
...

Beryl
I, I just. It's odd that I know that my father is frozen in the woods. However, I still miss him, I barely touch his room.

Nesvalyn conforts her and pats her shoulder, and she takes his hand, reassured.
Beryl excuses herself gets back upstairs to tend the garden, mentionning she is up there if we need her.
We start to check the room.
[Investigation - Pass ✔] Azzy finds writings about the religion of this village. The text refers to other unnamed gods, naming only the Winter Father. It contains the beliefs of the followers: they believe that the Winter Father is the one who provides sustenance during the winter. It appears that the years last only 230 days. Winter lasts for 8 months. It describes the Winter Father more as a force of the nature than an anthropomorphic entity.
Balnorin and Senri find a few irrelevant documents.
Nesvalyn goes around and manages to find a secret compartment in the desk, and by lifting the false bottom, he finds a collection of letters. Through the reading, they are correspondances between the priest and another villager. They're discussing about a dowry, especially that their son can marry Beryl. In the final letter, we learn that the son's name is D'hiara and is asking for jewelries. The final message is pleading "I know my family can't afford the dowry you're asking, but in the name of true love, you cannot deny that."

Nesvalyn shares the info and some banter within the party happens. Azzy shares his information found, concluding there isn't much to find here for now.

The follow-up
...

We get to find Beryl to ask a few more questions. As we're walking back to the garden, we find her doing some grooming, the plants are not changing. It's like she's been planting fully grown turnips into the empty soil, like it was for storage.

Beryl
Oh, how did it go?
Nesvalyn
We've got a few leads and have more questions if you don't mind.
Beryl
Oh sure, go ahead.
Nesvalyn
When did the sorceress appeared?
Beryl
It was a few months before the freeze. But it's always legends about the Sorceress, but not until the beginning of this winter who's been... It's... I'm confused.
Nesvalyn
It's fine, no worries.
Azzy
Did you meet the Sorceress in person?
Beryl
Is it really a person?
Nesvalyn
We don't know, you tell us.
Azzy
Is it more an idea?
Beryl
Every time I, how to describe this...
Azzy
Are the bad things addressed from the Sorceress?
Beryl
Yeah, like the whole town freezes, must've been from the Sorceress. Or the gods, but why?
Nesvalyn
Does the name D'hiara rings a bell?
Beryl
Oh. I didn't heard that name for a long time. Even now, I hear that speaking about that name. He was the love of my life.
Nesvalyn
I notice you're using the past, did something happen?
Beryl
He... he died in the Sorceress attack on the chapel.
Nesvalyn
I'm sorry to hear that. Can you tell us where D'hiara lives?
Beryl
That house over there. I used to see him from my bedroom window. My father was upset at first due to his lack of societal status. But he came around eventually. Our wedding was set for this spring, but you know...
Nesvalyn
I'm... sorry to hear that, I relate to that. Did you saw him dying or buried him?
Beryl
Well, yeah. I cremated him, as it's custom you know, releasing him back to the Winter.

Nesvalyn conforts her again as she starts to shiver.

Beryl
Thank you. I cremated him after the freeze, but they can still be harmed while frozen. I'm just afraid that their soul is still trapped in there.
Nesvalyn
I'm sorry you had to live through that, we'll keep you updated. It's going to be better.
Beryl
I know you're here from the Winter Father, and I was the only one safe to tell the story.
Nesvalyn
If it's the case, I'm sorry we're that late.
Azzy
Do you have any experience with magic?
Beryl
By goodness, no.

[Sleight of Hand - Fail ❌] Balnorin tried to be stealthy when trying to detect the magic.

Beryl
What are you doing?
Balnorin
I'm doing a prayer.

[Detect Magic] She doesn't have magic on her. But behind us is a strange kind of magic, from an unfamiliar school, probably some divine magic, all over Persy.

Beryl
How did you not get frozen?
Nesvalyn
We got lucky, but not everybody got that chance and got frozen.

↪ [Insight] She seems surprised in a confused way, but doesn't understand why or how, but doesn't look further.

She gets back to her gardening, and we find a place away to gather info.
Balnorin shares the info about the magic around Persy, and we notice he didn't follow us. When checking back, he's standing over Beryl.
When approaching Persy, Beryl's been humming, then let go a "Ah" and falls on her butt, as he's standing back without flinching.
As soon Nesvalyn touches Persy, he feels dead weight, and when looking at him, it seems as he has been frozen too.

Beryl (panicking)
The Sorceress is still here!
Nesvalyn
Hey, there are still a few of us, and as long there's life, there's hope.

Nesvalyn consoles and calm her down. She asks her to take her to her chamber, so she can lay down, and he brings her there. The rest of the party regroups in front of D'hiara's house.

Quatuor at D'hiara's house
...

We enter this one room house, which was shared by multiple people. When going through here, it seems that D'hiara lived here with his parents.
[Investigation - Pass ✔] We find a collection of love letters between D'hiara and Beryl. Reading through reveals that the most recent addressed letter from Beryl about his father being dressed with the upcoming Hunt. Even now that he allowed them to marry, she is concerned that he would change his mind due to his temperament.
↪ By reading back through the texts of their religion, it mentions a Hunt happening once every season where a Lamb is hunted and given to the Winter Father.
[History] You don't recall seeing any sheep, lamb or related mask back in the forest.

We're going back to the Priest Study to get more info about the Hunt.

Second pass at the study
...

[Investigation - Pass ✔] We find through the letters that there is a consistent amount of gold paid out to different families in the village. This payout is given once for each season, and five times for each family in winter. These amounts are the church paying the families.
In the past years, no family repeats.
The last family paid was in Fall.

With nothing much, we decide to leave. As we're walking out the study room, it seems that we miss a set of footsteps: Senri doesn't follow us. When checking back to the study, she's not moving, and frozen too, right after she inspired Nesvalyn earlier.
[Detect Magic] Same kind of Divine magic.
We notice it's been two hours between Persy and Senri, giving us an idea of how much time remain before we lose another party member. We're heading upstairs to resume our investigation.

[Detect Magic] Balnorin realizes the source of the magic is in Beryl's bedroom.

The trio's plan
...

As we enter Beryl's quarters, Balnorin is getting reads from the bedroom.
[Stealth] We're trying to enter stealthy.
When entering, we hear Beryl snoring softly.
The magic trace is coming from a large wardrobe pressed against the wall.
Balnorin tries to open it, and we discover inside is a frozen men, dressed in bed clothes, looking pretty handsome and young.
As we notice, we hear Beryl waking up behind us, then a silence for a few moments.

Azzy
It appears you lied to us.

And when turning back to the wardrobe, Balnorin didn't turn around to Beryl, in fact, he is standing frozen in the position he had when he opened.

Until there were only two...
...

Beryl
I, I didn't want to tell you the truth, I was ashamed.
Azzy
Did you do this?
Beryl
No, I didn't froze anyone. I found D'hiara and I brought him back here, so we can be together.
Nesvalyn
Was he the Lamb from the hunt?
Beryl
No he wasn't.
Azzy
Were you?

She lowers her head, doesn't say anything for a while, but nods to acknowledge the fact.

Nesvalyn
Can you tell us what this hunt is about?
Beryl
You know, six times a year, they have the Hunt, where a random person under the age of 20 is chosen to become the Lamb. And if the village hunts, catches and sacrifices the Lamb, it will be a profitable Winter. But if the Lamb can escape and make it until the morning without being caught, it will be a cold winter for the village, but the Lamb will survive.
Azzy
No one wants the Lamb to survive.
Beryl
Unfortunately no.
I know I must looking insane to keep my fiance in the closet, and even if you keep the way it is, he's so young and I look so old.
Nesvalyn
When was the last time the Lamb survived?
Beryl
...I was the last Lamb to survive.
Nesvalyn
I... We are here to find the responsable of this, and all we know is we were looking for a Lamb, and... we're sorry.
Beryl
I didn't mean to cast the spell.
Nesvalyn
I know you are.
Beryl
I was unfortunate to be corned, but the Winter Father softened and He blessed me.
Azzy
And you don't know how to save everyone?
Beryl
I, I do not know how to unfreeze them. The only issue is... I was a coward for so long. I couldn't face my father for so long. You know... Nevermind, I couldn't face it and see everybody dead. So I left them frozen. And then, before I knew I got any older, if I undo the spell, the temporal shifts catches up with the ones affected by the spell. Now I realize it's been so long that people will die if I end the spell.
Azzy
I understand it's a concern, but if you never end the spell, what happens if you die? Does everybody stays frozen? Or they get released?
Beryl
When I'll die, the world dies with me. I didn't thought this story would be true, but it seems that the Winter Father used to bring me to use Apocalypse. I think my father rigged the lottery just to not marry D'hiara.
Azzy
It doesn't have to end the apocalypse or the end. You don't have to be the reason of their death.

As we acknowledge that she is the target, both Azzy and Nesvalyn are looking at each other. Nesvalyn nods in sign that it's the thing to do... but Azzy doesn't react nor move, leaving only Nesvalyn and his target, Beryl.

Only one remained...
...

Nesvalyn
Of course Fate wanted me to do that.

Nesvalyn sighs as he's getting closer to Beryl, who is crying.

Nesvalyn
I'm...I know exactly what you're feeling, being hunted. I'm being hunted too for something I never asked for. Hells, even my fiancé wants my death due to that.
Beryl
I didn't asked for that.
Nesvalyn
I know. I'm... just sorry that this happens to you too. Fate hasn't been kind to you. I'm so sorry you had to go through that. I just hope in a future life you'll be together with your fiancé and happy with him.
Beryl (looking at D'hiara)
... I hope too.
Nesvalyn
May the Fates be more clement in your next lives.

Upon saying that, Nesvalyn plunges a psychic dagger into Beryl, in a way to make it the most painless possible and quickest. As she succumbs from the attack, the rest of the party regains control of their bodies.
D'hiara regains conscience, and looks at his palms who ages suddenly, starts to scream and collapses from the choc into Balnorin arms.
We regroup and hear calls and screams of pain. When going outside, people age and die in front of us.
As we make our way back to our Spelljammer, we understand the scene now, but they all collapsed and withered away.
We notice the pendant on the deer person is the same symbol as the church, implying that the person in front was Beryl's father.
We take off and leave the planet.

The debriefing
...

Naus clicks on and shoot a beam of light, showing Sprigg.

Sprigg
Hey guys, you made it pretty quickly.
Azzy
It was pretty easy compared to last one.
Sprigg
I hope it didn't come to a moral dilemma.
Azzy
Our conscience is clear.
Nesvalyn
I... It's fine, there wasn't much a dilemma.
Sprigg
I did a deposit on your crystals for achieving the contract.
Sprigg
And if I'm correct, you're close to a junkyard, which could be useful.
Nesvalyn
Do you know about translation pills?
Sprigg
Oh, I mean. Yeah. Those are considered fully legal under the watchful eyes of the FCA. But, typically Death Inc. is in business of apothecary, and they usually carry those. If you get into a sentient undead that's doesn't try to eat you, you can get some information.

Death Inc entry updated.

Azzy
Do you happen to know the prize and size of an hyperdrive module?
Sprigg
Oh it's a chip. Naus can install it on its own, right?
Naus
I. SHALL. NOT. SPEAK. WITH. THE. OPPRESSOR.
Sprigg (rolling his eyes)
Anyhow, here at OSS, we don't care if you're acquiring things in illegimate things.
Balnorin (to Persy and Nesvalyn)
See, told you.
Azzy
That's good to know.
Sprigg
We're assassins, so we're already morally questionnable, but it depends who you ask.

An explosion happens behind Sprigg.

Sprigg
Oh sorry, I'm on mission, got to go.

His projection disappears, leaving us between ourselves.

Nesvalyn
Heck, I had more questions. Well, next time.
Senri
I have a spell for that.
Nesvalyn
I have a lot to ask honestly, it can wait. But thanks.

The scrap planet is 4 days away, and we decide to head to that direction.
